  PILAR HISTORICAL DOCUMENTATION
  In the Spring of 1691, the Chief Judge of the Audencia de Manila, presided at a Residencia (major legal inquiry) into the loss at Guam on 2 June 1690 of the Manila galleon Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Saragosa y Santiago.
  
  The conduct of her commanding admiral at the time, Don Juan de Echevarria (and his officers), was the subject of this official investigation.
  
  A copy of the inquiry (including an earlier inquiry held three days after the shipwreck), with the accompanying letters and papers, was then sent to Spain.
  
  Our research found more than six hundred page report of the Residencia ' was eventually filed away in Section de Camera de Justicia ( in the Court of Justice) at the Archivo General de Indias in Spain, where it lay unnoticed for almost three centuries in the section "Escribania en Camera de Justica".
  
  Some information was also gleaned from Section "Contratacion" Legajo and Section 'Mexico" Legajo
