Current Interests helping teenagers develop "Life Skills" through workshops
The success of our children is very dear to our hearts and we are prepared to do almost anything for them to achieve this. But how do we know what success means for them? In our incessant pursuit for them to get good academic grades we often forget some very important aspect of their development.
A successful life is a much more complex phenomena than being good in mathematics, or physics or art or literature. Academic success, though important is not a guarantee for “success” which anyway is a very individual and personal goal and for which the child should be encouraged to find his own solutions. Far more important is for the child himself to become aware of his own potential and from there to be able to define his individual goals and in later years to trace his own path to realizing them.
It must also be mentioned that on a practical level “material” success in our society is much less a function of our academic accomplishments than that of our personal qualities such as interpersonal and communication skills, leadership and inspirational abilities sensitivity and empathy for others, all of which can and should be developed. However, none of these so called “Life Skills” are formally taught in schools and the child has to rely on his natural instincts, his ability to learn from the mistakes he makes and eventually also the advice he receives from significant adults in his or her life as well as the inputs of his peer group. However, some of these factors are often very arbitrary leaving the outcomes to chance, which usually puts the “weaker elements” at a disadvantage.
At the pre-adult tender age, full of self doubt and inexperience that define them, our children need our help in order to learn and to assume their place in adult society. Parents, teachers and other significant people in their lives are the first line of help for them. Yet and often without even realizing it ourselves, convinced as we are that we are doing what is best for them, it is our own desires and values which we try to project onto our children often without giving them the possibility to discover and express their own individual natures.
But what if they were allowed to discover for themselves their potential in a classroom environment in the company of the peers who will not only evaluate them but who also represent the next generation and will accompany them into later adulthood. This may be a more natural way to help them to discover the values, attitudes, behavior patterns etc. that will lead them to a better understanding of themselves and a more effective interaction and empathy with others of their generation. Being sympathetic and empathetic to others but still remaining confident and assertive enough to effectively defend ones values and ones points of view is something that is really worth striving for.
This is what the program “Live” is designed to accomplish it is made up of a series of interactive workshops sessions consisting of role playing, game playing as well as critical group based analysis of the outcomes of these exercises. The workshops cover such subjects as, defining individual needs, understanding feelings, feeling safe and happy, how to say no, listening attentively, solving conflicts, being creative, thinking out of the box etc.
With this workshop we will introduce your children to a journey of self-discovery and understanding, of self-realization and self-fulfillment as well as allowing them to become more acutely tuning to their environment and the expectations and needs of others with whom they will in adult life come into daily contact: wives, friends, colleagues, bosses etc. All this is a surely a true formula for success in life.
