Rémy Bossu is an experienced seismologist who has always been interested in topics of societal relevance. At the head of the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), Bossu has focused his studies on improving rapid earthquake information and harnessing the collective power of citizens to rapidly constrain earthquakes’ impact through Internet and mobile applications. Those ideas led to the concept of citizen seismology, merging crowd-sourcing tools, flash-sourcing (an innovative approach based on real time analysis of web traffic), the use of social media, educational activities, seismological data, and citizen-operated seismic networks.
Additionally, since July 2012, Bossu leads the technical implementation of the tsunami warning system for the Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique. His previous activities include seismic hazard assessment for underground nuclear waste storage, seismicity induced by anthropogenic activities, or microseismicity as a tool to monitor gas reservoir evolutions in the North Sea.
The same year, Bossu participated in a one year international study, organised by the FNEP (Fédération Nationale Entreprise et Performances) on the conditions of efficient crisis response, during which he focused on the use of social networks and ICT for improved response. The stydy will be the subject of a book to be published at the end of 2013
On behalf of the EMSC, Bossu also has significant co-ordination activities within the global seismological community, notably through numerous European research projects, including the organization in 2010 of the ESC conference in Montpellier, where 750 seismologists from 65 countries gathered; collaborations have also been developed with organizations such as UNESCO, Council of Europe, and the ISDR, as well as the private sector. He is regularly interviewed by journalists after damaging earthquakes. In 2007, he was awarded the IRIS prize for innovative risk education and risk awareness initiatives.
