My name is Simon Carpentier. I come from a small, remote, rural town in the north of France, called Hucqueliers. I am a second year student at University College of London, studying Politics and European studies. French, yet schooled in London, I see myself as a European citizen rather than one of a particular country. As a curious and open-minded individual, I have been inspired by my travels to learn as much as I can about Europe’s diversity and complexity. I have today the chance to be the Cultural Events Officer of the UCLU European Society, organizing cultural events around Europe and promoting Europe's cultural diversity.
As a politically active and interested person, I feel strongly drawn to this field. My studies in the literature section of the French Baccalaureate gave me a broad base of knowledge and learning skills. Studying a variety of philosophers such as Sartre, Marx, Nietzsche and Plato also fed a growing sociopolitical awareness, love for debating and following of current affairs. I began to work on the French London Radio at the Lycee, writing and broadcasting content such as live discussions on news and cultural events. I am now writing for the EUREKA Magazine, the official magazine of the UCLU European Society. I am also the designer of the magazine.
In the future, I would really like to continue my journalism professionally, definitely writing on political subjects. Above all, I want to work against injustice, to help bring about a more egalitarian and fair society for all.
