Xavier Le Torrivellec (xavier@letorrivellec.fr;Array) obtained his doctorate at the EHESS in Paris in 2006 (‘History of Identities in Muslim Russia: the Republic of Bashkortostan (1969-2004)’). As Lavoisier Research Fellow of the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he carried out fieldwork in Bashkortostan, Russia between 1996 and 2000. He worked as Teaching Assistant in Political Science at the Moscow State Institute for International Relations (MGIMO, Moscow) and then at the Institute of Political Studies (IEP, Paris). Since 2002 he teaches Russian History at the National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations (INALCO, Paris). His research focuses on the history of identities, territorial solidarities, language policy and ethnography in Central Eurasia since the nineteenth century, especially in the Volga-Urals region, and Bashkiria in particular. He is the author of several articles on these topics, published in Cahiers du monde russe, Revue d’études comparatives Est-Ouest, Ab Imperio and other journals. As a specialist in twentieth-century Volga-Urals history, he is now involved in several research projects at the Centre for Russian, Caucasian and East-European Studies (CERCEC, EHESS). From 2009 till 2011, he worked in Moscow as assistant director of the French-Russian centre in social and human sciences. Since Sept. 2013, he works as a professor at Voronezh State University.
