ASSESSMENT OF KNOWLEDGE, ATTITUTES AND PRACTICES TOWARD THE MANAGEMENT OF LOW BIRTH WEIGHT INFANTS AMONG NURSES AT KIBAGABAGA DISTRICT HOSPITAL

This study was aimed at assessing knowledge, attitudes and practices toward the management of LBW infants among nurses at Kibagabaga District Hospital.

The specific objectives were to find out the knowledge of nurses who work in neonatology and maternity wards about the management of low birth weight infants, determine the attitudes of nurses who work in neonatology and maternity wards toward the management of low birth weight infants and to assess the practices of nurses who work in neonatology and maternity wards toward the management of low birth weight infants.

To achieve these objectives, a Self-administered questionnaire for nurses working in maternity and neonatology services were used to collect data.
This study was cross-sectional and has been conducted at Kibagabaga District Hospital; the sample of 45 nurses has been used. At the end of our study we arrived at these results:
Only 54% of nurses knew that a LBW is a birth weight less than 2500gm
(76%) of nurses reported that they don’t feed LBWI by NGT that It is done by their parents
31,11% of nurses reported less body fat as reason why a LBW infant has difficult in breathing.
Majority of nurses 82% don’t immunize LBWI.
Nurses suggested to increases skills of nurses with trainings (95,56%), availability of equipment and supplies (86,87%),
31,11 % of nurses recognize early inadequate warmth by cold on touch.
62% of nurses don’t give IEC to parents of LBW infants.
29% of nurses know KMC as a best way to keep LBW infants warmth.
Majority of nurses (66,67%) said hands washing before touching the baby.
The difficulties of nurses who in met in managing LBWI are lack of materials (100%), lack of training in neonatal care (88,89%), insufficient knowledge (84,44%)
Majority of respondents (84,44% and 82,22%) among 45 nurses reported that the role of KMC is affection between mother and baby and prevention of hypothermia.
