Jean-Louis Leterme has more than 35 years in-depth experience in rural sociology, gained through participation in a wide range of rural development projects in Asia. He has considerable experience in working at grass-roots level with rural project beneficiaries and stakeholders (often farmers, Landless people & women), and has particular skills in the development of strategies to improve communication between policy-makers and beneficiaries as a means of minimizing conflicts, through the adoption of a participatory dialogue approaches. He is also highly experienced in the integration of a sociological dimension into plans for establishment and/or strengthening of institutions responsible for project implementation. With regard to social development and resettlement of affected people, he is familiar with ADB’s Safeguard Policy Statement (2009) and related laws of the countries he worked (Bangladesh, Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao, etc.) and participated in review of documents and implementation. He participated in many occasions as team member to review, evaluate and/or appraise UN, WB, EU, DFID, AFD, JICA and Caritas projects.
