  • Cranfield University - MSc Thesis "Geothermal Potential of Offshore Mature Hydrocarbon Fields "

    Bedfordshire 2016 - 2016 Significant volumes of water are co-produced in existing hydrocarbon developments. This water may be capable of generating electrical power, which could either be used to power field production equipment and delay the field’s decommissioning, or exported to a grid. This work evaluates the potential for generating geothermal electrical power offshore. From the work, minimum criteria are identified for the concept to work, which will help identify locations where the implementation may be technically and economically feasible. Rather than aiming at the exploitation of new offshore geothermal resources reutilisation of existing wells in mature hydrocarbon reservoirs could lead to lower operating costs. Equally, the combination of hydrocarbon extraction and geothermal energy co-production may make new developments more attractive.
