    2000 - 2004 I worked as a research fellow on research and development projects funded by the European Commission. These projects were focused on telecommunications network management and novel application of Internet technology with mobile telephony.

    Projects included: MANTRIP, FAIN, MIAMI, HARP and many other collaborations with project partners from Japan, the US as well as Europe.

    I was lucky enough to work with Jon Crowcroft, now at Cambridge, Jonathan Smith of the University of Pennsylvania and renew an acquaintance with Andrew Herbert, Microsoft and Cambridge.

    1993 - 1996 I worked as a software engineer developing the security and inter-operability components of a commerical CORBA compliant Object Request Broker system known as DAIS. This was developed by a twenty strong team within ICL's Government and Major Companies division.

    This won the British Computer Society product of the year award in 1995.

    It was based on a distributed processing platform known as ANSAWare developed by a team led by Andrew Herbert at APM.

    I developed the prototype that was the basis of the subsequent OMG IIOP and Security Services standards.

    I worked in a technical capacity and also advised on database and performance issues for major corporations.

  • Signature Industries - Systems Engineer

    1986 - 1989 I worked as a systems engineer: developing firmware and hardware for embedded systems to be used as telecommunications to equipment controllers for the British motorway network.

    I was responsible for the development of four embedded controller equipments, and was wholly responsible for the design of the firmware and micro-computer design.

    I also took on the additional responsibility of the design of protection circuitry and test equipment.

    Most responsible job I ever had. The equipment I designed is still in use on the Queen Elisabeth Bridge on the M20 motorway from London to, ultimately, Paris.

    The equipment has been installed and operated in Spain and South Africa as well the UK.
