The Servin’s laboratories in the emerging field called Cellular Microbiology, has focused his research interest on host-microbial pathogen interactions by combining cell biology with microbiology. Research conducted by Alain L. Servin and colleagues for over 20 years focused on understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis of enterovirulent or uropathogenic Escherichia coli expressing Afa/Dr adhesins (diffusely-adhering E. coli - DAEC) and rotavirus. A basic research adds a component applied research with the aim, the development of biotherapeutic agents through the use of probiotic strains of lactobacilli isolated from human vaginal and intestinal microbiota to treat bacterial and viral diarrhea and vaginal infections.
