The main objective of the project was to determine what infrastructure technology innovations are most suitable for a national showcase of innovation in sustainable urban development at East Lake, Canberra. The infrastructure options assessed include the water treatment and solutions, the alternative energy sources, the by-product exchange schemes and the solid waste treatment, and finally the transportation systems.
The implied strategy was to explore a range of scales – on-block through to district/regional – but with particular emphasis on options that allow to ‘close the loop’ on East Lake’s resource requirements, reducing reliance on Canberra’s larger centralised infrastructure system. A comprehensive desktop review to identify and evaluate ‘candidate’ technology options was carried out and submitted to the relevant CSIRO sustainability experts and key ACT stakeholders at a joint CSIRO/ACT Government workshop.
