Born on 22 February 1950 at Rufisque in a family where artisans took a large place in social living. I’ve spent my youth in the quiet years before independence. We lived in an atmosphere of creativity and ingenuity, emanated from craftsmen with several professions. After leaving the studies for music, I worked in a musical formation which focussed on harmonious music, while I preserved the passion for sketching and painting. My tours have given me the chance to meet other African artists and craftsmen and by that I could deepen myself in my art.
From 1975 until 1976 I’ve followed 6 months the course on school of arts in Dakar, in search of the profession. In 1976 I’ve been allowed for two years in Gambia to get education in Batik technique. With “Queen Amy”, the owner of Bakau, (an atelier for craft and art), I’ve specialized myself in this technique. In 1978, this model atelier, gave me the idea to open an atelier for myself and use the same technique.
A large part of my life was devoted in this way, in an intensive manner, to my education and to the completing of my capacities in the field of crafts. The work as an art painter and a musician goes parallel throughout my life, and it wasn’t always easy to move between these two expressions. Anyway, I do my best to persist as an autodidact.
In my art of painting I’ll try to reproduce different aspects of the original African life, and I get inspired by the past. My new method is based on signs and symbols coming from the old Egypt, which were found back by the Dogon people in Mali, and stands for vitality and energy. These symbols give my work more depth and significance.
For my paintings I use acrylic on canvas and I like to work with other materials like textile, which give my paintings relief and a more dimensional view.
