  • FraCa - Team Leader

    2014 - 2015 The Little Box Challenge consists of designing and building a kW-scale inverter with the highest power density (at least 50 Watts per cubic inch). Based on a 2kW inverter, the dedicated volume must be less than 40 cubic-inches or 655 cubic centimeters. For further information, see https://www.littleboxchallenge.com/

    From the early stage, I've been attracted and enthusiastic with regard to the set of specifications. Three engineers joined me to attempt this competition and the FRACA team was born. Our motivation is to demonstrate that the technical requirements can be met with market-available components and controlled costs. To reach the target :
    - Multilevel-Interleaved topologies were selected to alleviate filtering constraints, spread losses and avoid thermal hot-spots ;
    - The low cost, high performance potential of Silicon Superjunction devices were promoted in the place of wideband gap components (SiC or GaN) ;
    - In conjunction with the distributed losses, a novel approach to thermal management was constucted for the 3D prototype.

    This project was personnally funded. The technical report (incl. measurements, pictures, waveforms, etc) was sent to the jury on July the 22nd. Unfortunately we were not selected among the 18 finalists.
