2015 - 2015The project is based on FODMAPS. FODMAPS are small carbohydrates that are fermented in the large intestine. FODMAPTM is an acronym for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, And Polyols. Foods containing FODMAPs are often dietary causes for symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
The project would involve screening wheat cultivars for fructans (fructans are FODMAPs) and identifying those cultivars with low levels of fructans. The project will include the following aspects:
- Literature searches (using electronic databases on internal website)
- Sample extraction (lab skills such as pipetting, making solvents/solutions, accuracy and attention to detail are important)
- Analysing fructans using a spectrophotometric method
- Documenting data in my lab book and entering data into an Excel spreadsheet
- Computer software you will use includes Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and EndNote
